Softball Recap: Ponder Has No Trouble Against Pilot Point

Ponder had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 13-run drubbing they dealt Pilot Point on Saturday. The Lions put the hurt on the Bearcats with a sharp 16-3 win. Considering the Lions have won ten contests by more than five runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

Vada Cochrum made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was even better at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI.

In other batting news, Tessa Taft and Skyler Medders did most of the damage at the plate: Taft scored two runs while going 1-for-4, while Medders scored two runs while going 3-for-5. Another player making a difference was Grayson Wells, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-4.

Ponder was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .389. They are a perfect 8-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Ponder is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-4 record this season. As for Pilot Point, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost ten of their last 12 games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-11 record this season.

Ponder and Pilot Point could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings. The Lions will face off against Boyd at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday with a big rank disadvantage (321 vs. 118). Meanwhile, Pilot Point (ranked 814th) will meet Paradise (ranked 253rd) at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
