Baseball Recap: Dayton Takes a Loss

Dayton extended their losing streak to ten on Friday, dropping their season record down to 8-12 in the process. They lost 9-3 to the Elko Indians. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Dust Devils of the 14-4 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2024.

Dayton got a good showing from Jacob Jeffcoat, who pitched 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Jeffcoat has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in five consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Dayton saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ivor Evans, who went 1-for-2 with two runs. Evans is becoming a predictor of the Dust Devils' success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 4-1 (and 4-11 when he doesn't).

As for Elko, their record now sits at 13-11. They not only won on Friday, but they posted their biggest win since March 28th (when they won 7-0).

On Elko's side, Ethan Kraintz spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered three earned runs on five hits.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Carter Kidwell, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. Those two stolen bases gave him a new career-high. Coy Jones was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two runs and one triple.

While Dayton had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
