Preview: Calvary Christian Knights vs. Edgewood Academy Wildcats
The Calvary Christian Knights and the Edgewood Academy Wildcats will face off at 8:30 a.m. on December 29th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Edgewood Academy took a loss in their last game and will be looking to turn the tables on Calvary Christian, who comes in off a win.
Even though Brookstone scored an imposing 70 points two weeks ago, Calvary Christian still came out on top. In a tight matchup that could have gone either way, Calvary Christian made off with a 71-70 victory over Brookstone. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Calvary Christian.
Tj Benson continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, dropping a double-double on 33 points and ten assists. The match was his sixth in a row with at least ten points. Dylan Walls was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on ten points and 21 rebounds.
Meanwhile, Edgewood Academy pushed their score all the way to 56 on Thursday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 57-56 to Abbeville Christian Academy. Edgewood Academy's loss continues a unfortunate trend for the squad, making it three in a row.
Edgewood Academy's defeat came about despite a quality game from Johnny Groves, who scored 25 points along with seven rebounds. Those 25 points set a new season-high mark for him. Another player making a difference was Brody Whitt, who scored seven points along with nine rebounds.
Even though they lost, Edgewood Academy were working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.
Calvary Christian's victory bumped their record up to 5-8. As for Edgewood Academy, they have fallen quite a ways from their 23-4 record last season and are now at 7-11.
Friday's game is shaping up to be a masterclass in shooting: Calvary Christian have been dynamite from deep this season, having only made 31.5% of their threes per game. However, it's not like Edgewood Academy struggles in that department as they've only drained 34.9% of their threes per game this season. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Calvary Christian was able to grind out a solid victory over Edgewood Academy in their previous matchup back in November of 2019, winning 61-51. Does Calvary Christian have another victory up their sleeve, or will Edgewood Academy turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
