Baseball Game Preview: Woodstock Wasps vs. Springfield Cosmos

The Woodstock Wasps will challenge the Springfield Cosmos at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Woodstock has three straight wins, Springfield has six straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

On Tuesday, Woodstock was able to grind out a solid victory over West Rutland, taking the game 11-6.

Riley O'Neal and Drew Gallagher were major factors while hitting and pitching. On the mound, O'Neal pitched three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. Meanwhile, Gallagher struck out seven batters over four innings while giving up four earned runs off three hits. At the plate, O'Neal went 1-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run, while Gallagher got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Benjamin Runstein, who went 1-for-4 with four stolen bases and two runs. That's the most runs he has posted since back in May of 2024. Jake Blackburn was another key player, going 1-for-3 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.

Meanwhile, Springfield came up short against Bellows Falls on Tuesday, falling 14-1.

Woodstock's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 3-0. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 7.7 runs this season. As for Springfield, their loss dropped their record down to 0-4.

Woodstock took their win against Springfield in their previous matchup back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 17-5 score. Do the Wasps have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Cosmos turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
