Basketball Recap: Wekiva Mustangs vs. Horizon Hawks
Wekiva was the 50-46 winner over Horizon when they last played one another back in December of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Wekiva Mustangs took a 51-44 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Horizon Hawks on Friday. The Mustangs have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Wekiva lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Jakayla Johnson, who posted nine points and six boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Tiana Washington, who had eight points and eight rebounds.
Amaya Mitchell had an outrageously good game for Horizon as she went 10 of 16 en route to 23 points and four steals. With that strong performance, Mitchell is now averaging an impressive 2.1 steals per game. Another player making a difference was Zoe Corjay, who earned eight points along with seven steals and six assists.
Wekiva's defeat dropped their record down to 5-14. As for Horizon, their win bumped their record up to 12-5.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Wekiva will venture away from home to face off against West Orange at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Wekiva is facing West Orange at the right time seeing as West Orange is stuck on a four-game losing streak. As for Horizon, they are taking a road trip to challenge Oak Ridge at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. Oak Ridge knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past six contests -- so hopefully Horizon likes a good challenge.
