Basketball Game Preview: Fort Frye Cadets vs. Newcomerstown Trojans

The Fort Frye Cadets will face off against the Newcomerstown Trojans at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Both teams are coming into the contest red-hot, with Fort Frye sitting on four straight victories and Newcomerstown on three.

Fort Frye is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They simply couldn't be stopped on Saturday as they easily beat The Linsly School 58-19. With that win, Fort Frye brought their scoring average up to 50.8 points per game.

Fort Frye's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Elle Casto, who dropped a double-double with 13 points and ten boards, and Ella Dowler, who shot 53% from the field en route to 21 points and six rebounds. Those 13 points gave Casto a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Raelann Morgenstern, who went 5-for-8 to rack up 13 points.

Fort Frye smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards every time they've taken the court this season.

Meanwhile, Newcomerstown hadn't done well against Malvern recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Saturday. The Trojans pulled ahead with a 53-52 photo finish over the Hornets.

Newcomerstown's victory bumped their record up to 3-1. As for Fort Frye, their win bumped their record up to 4-0.

Everything came up roses for Fort Frye against Newcomerstown in their previous matchup back in February of 2020, as the team secured a 68-15 victory. Do the Cadets have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Trojans turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
