Softball Game Preview: Holy Name Green Wave vs. Lake Catholic Cougars

The Holy Name Green Wave will square off against the Lake Catholic Cougars at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Holy Name is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.5 runs per game this season.

On Tuesday, Holy Name sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with an 8-6 victory over Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Green Wave.

Reagan Vavro spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and two unearned) runs on five hits and racked up ten Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than nine strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Holy Name let Alli Orzech and Bailey Garlow run wild. Orzech went 1-for-2 with one home run and two runs, while Garlow went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. Those two stolen bases gave Garlow a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kylee Blinky, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI and one run.

Meanwhile, Lake Catholic lost 11-3 to Beaumont School on Tuesday. The Cougars have struggled against the Blue Streaks recently, as the game was their third consecutive lost meeting.

Taylor Jacobs made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with one triple, one stolen base, and one run. Those hits were her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Jules Amato, who went 3-for-4 with one run and one double.

Holy Name's win bumped their record up to 9-2. As for Lake Catholic, their loss dropped their record down to 2-4.

Thursday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Holy Name has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .438. However, it's not like Lake Catholic struggles in that department as they've averaged .450. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
