Preview: Sunnyside Blue Devils vs. Tucson High Magnet School Badgers
Sunnyside and the Badgers are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2016, but not for long. The Sunnyside Blue Devils will head out on the road to square off against the Tucson High Magnet School Badgers at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Sunnyside is coming into the contest hot, having won their last six games.
Sunnyside stacked a 15th blowout win onto their ever-increasing hoard on Tuesday. They breezed by Marana on the road to the tune of 67-27. Given Sunnyside's advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 16th, while the Tigers are ranked 191st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Sunnyside can attribute much of their success to Dora Medina, who scored ten points along with seven rebounds and two steals, and Nayeli Nidez-Acu?a, who scored eight points along with nine rebounds and three steals. Medina has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last eight times she's played. Another player making a difference was Alana Felix, who scored 11 points.
Meanwhile, Tucson High Magnet School had to endure a four-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They walked away with a 38-30 win over Rincon/University on Tuesday.
Sunnyside's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 23-3. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 61.3 points per game. As for Tucson High Magnet School, they now have a winning record of 13-12.
Sunnyside didn't have too much breathing room in their match against the Badgers in their previous meeting last Tuesday, but they still walked away with a 52-46 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Sunnyside since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
