Basketball Game Preview: Wekiva Mustangs vs. Ocoee Knights

The Wekiva Mustangs will take on the Ocoee Knights in a holiday battle at at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. The teams are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Wekiva has struggled recently with three defeats in a row, while Ocoee will arrive with four straight victories.

On Tuesday, Wekiva was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 48-42 to Oak Ridge.

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Paris Blackwood, who posted eight points and seven rebounds. Those seven rebounds gave her a new career-high. Senaia Asanya was another key player, going 5 of 12 on her way to 11 points and five rebounds.

Meanwhile, Ocoee hadn't done well against West Orange recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Ocoee walked away with a 55-43 win over West Orange. Given the Knights' advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 29th, while the Warriors are ranked 391st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Ocoee's victory bumped their record up to 10-1. As for Wekiva, their loss dropped their record down to 3-8.

Wekiva didn't have too much breathing room in their matchup against Ocoee in their previous matchup back in December of 2023, but they still walked away with a 34-30 win. Does Wekiva have another victory up their sleeve, or will Ocoee turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
