Football Game Preview: Waverly Vikings vs. Standing Bear Grizzlies

Waverly is preparing for their first district matchup of the season on Friday. They will host the Standing Bear Grizzlies at 7:00 p.m. Waverly will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more points each contest than the last.

Waverly is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They blew past Elkhorn 50-15 last Thursday. With the Vikings ahead 41-8 at the half, the game was all but over already.

Waverly's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Brockston Teply, who threw for 203 yards and three touchdowns on only 17 passes, and Nathan Axmann, who rushed for 75 yards and a pair of scores. Axmann is also crushing it when it comes to rushing touchdowns: he's punched in at least two every time he's taken the field this season.

Waverly didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Elkhorn to a completion percentage of just 42.1%. The Vikings weren't nearly as limited: they posted one of 76.2%.

Waverly didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Max Leininger and Gavin McMillan. Leininger got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Meanwhile, Standing Bear lost 33-13 to Gretna East last Thursday. The Grizzlies haven't had much luck with the Griffins recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.

Although Standing Bear took the loss, they still got scores from Hayden Holdren and Paul Hart.

Waverly's victory bumped their record up to 4-0. As for Standing Bear, their loss dropped their record down to 2-2.

Waverly came out on top in a nail-biter against Standing Bear in their previous meeting back in September of 2024, sneaking past 2-0. Will the Vikings repeat their success, or do the Grizzlies have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
