Basketball Recap: Mercy Monarchs vs. Roncalli Catholic Crimson Pride
If the Mercy Monarchs were riding high off their 56-24 takedown of the Ralston Rams last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Mercy took a hard 56-38 fall against the Crimson Pride on Thursday. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Mercy in their matchups with the Crimson Pride: they've now lost three in a row.
Mercy's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Leah Anthofer, who scored 15 points along with eight rebounds and two blocks. It was the first time this season that Anthofer scored 15 or more points. Another player making a difference was Melina Nelson, who scored nine points along with eight rebounds.
Leading Roncalli Catholic to victory were Rhionna Matthews and Jordyn Rohlfsen. Matthews almost dropped a double-double on nine points and ten assists, while Rohlfsen scored 22 points along with five rebounds and three steals. Alice Cunningham was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with seven rebounds.
Mercy's defeat dropped their record down to 3-12. As for Roncalli Catholic, they now have a winning record of 9-8.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Mercy will take on the Mustangs at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Concordia is no doubt hoping to put an end to a ten-game streak of away losses. As for Roncalli Catholic, they will be playing in front of their home fans against the Cardinals at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Hopefully South Sioux City focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up eight on Friday.
