Mater Dei, Oaks Christian advance to 2013 Boras Classic final

Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) advanced to the championship game of the Boras Classic southern regional with a convincing 6-1 win over Lakewood on Thursday on its home field.

The Monarchs, who have won 13 in a row (13-1) will take on Oaks Christian in the championship game today at 6 p.m. at JSerra Catholic. The winner of the game will face Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove, Calif.), the north regional champion, on April 13 at University of Pacific in Stockton.

Mater Dei got strong outings from the top of the lineup as the top four batters each had at least two hits and scored all six runs. Ryan McMahon led the hitting attack with a 3-for-3 effort that included two RBIs and a run scored with a pair of doubles. He is 7-for-7 in his last two games.

Austin Grebeck, Tyler Adkison and Jeremy Martinez each had two hits apiece with Martinez driving in two runs. Brandon Perez also had two RBIs.



Charlie Vorsheck got the win, going seven innings and giving up just one run on four hits with seven strikeouts.

Oaks Christian (Westlake Village, Calif.) 5, JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) 2
The Lions scored all of their runs in the bottom of the third and were actually outhit by JSerra Catholic 11-5. With the win, Oaks Christian advances to the championship game against Mater Dei. Jack Kruger had the big blow for Oaks Christian with a grand slam. Chase Strumpf, Casey Worden and Ryan Fitzpatrick each had two hits for JSerra Catholic.

El Toro (Lake Forest, Calif.) 7, West Ranch (Valencia, Calif.) 1
Dan James was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs to lead El Toro's 12-hit attack in a win over West Ranch. Logan Roberts, Jonah Arenado, Andy Krear and Joey Moscatiello each had two hits for the Chargers while Stephen Villines went seven innings for the win, striking out four.

Great Oak (Temecula, Calif.) 5, Santiago (Corona, Calif.) 4
Great Oak advanced to the fifth-place game with a single run in the bottom of the seventh. Eli Lingos hit a sacrifice fly that scored Mitch Hayes with the winning run. Lingos, Hayes and Andrew Hermanson each had two hits for Great Oak.

Vista Murrieta (Murrieta, Calif.) 5, El Camino Real (Woodland Hills, Calif.) 4
The Broncos got their first win of the tournament with a four-run rally in the fourth inning. Steven Garrett was 3-for-3 with an RBI and two doubles to lead Vista Murrieta. Hayden Rappoport had the big hit for El Camino Real with a three-run homer.

Loyola (Los Angeles) 10, Hart (Newhall, Calif.) 5
The Cubs scored in each of the first four innings to build a 9-3 lead over Hart. Brandon Caruso was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored for Loyola while Chad Powers was 3-for-3 with a double, a run scored and two RBIs. Quinn Brodey added a double and two RBIs.



Canyon (Anaheim, Calif.) 8, Chatsworth (Calif.) 6
Canyon banged out 13 hits and held on to edge Chatsworth. Josh Balbuena and Cole Garcia each had three hits with two RBIs. Garcia also had a home run and two doubles. Shane Carrier was 2-for-5 with two doubles while Joe Van Marter had a double. Nick Milone and Tyler Ryan each hit a home run for Chatsworth.

Bishop Amat (La Puente, Calif.) 12, Chaminade (West Hills, Calif.) 3
The Lancers had just six hits in the win, but they took advantage of 10 walks and three Chaminade errors. Michael Palos was 2-for-2 while Anthony Walters and Adam Alcantara each had a double for the winners.

Games scheduled for today at Mater Dei include: 13th place - Loyola vs. Vista Murrieta at 9 a.m.; 11th place - Chatsworth vs. Chaminade at 3 p.m.; 5th place - El Toro vs. Great Oak at noon; 9th place - Bishop Amat vs. Canyon at 6 p.m.

Games at JSerra Catholic include: 15th place - El Camino Real vs. Hart at 9 a.m.; 7th place - West Ranch vs. Santiago at noon; 3rd place - JSerra Catholic vs. Lakewood at 3 p.m.
