Baseball Recap: Montville Comes Up Short

After flying high against Passaic County Tech on Friday, Montville came back down to earth. The Mustangs fell just short of the Columbia Cougars by a score of 5-4 on Monday. The Mustangs were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Cougars apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in May of 2023.

Kyle Cinella was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he didn't allow a single earned run over 5.1 innings pitched.

At the plate, Richie Mattina made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. That stolen base marked the first that he has snagged this season. Another player making a difference was Nick Del Guidice, who went 1-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Montville's defeat dropped their record down to 5-8. As for Columbia, they now have a winning record of 7-6.

Coming up, Montville will head out on the road to face off against Pompton Lakes at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Mustangs' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Cardinals have averaged an impressive 7.7 runs per game this season. As for Columbia, they will look to defend their home field on Wednesday against Union at 4:00 p.m.
