Baseball Recap: Taft Picks Up Third Consecutive Win

Taft waltzed into their contest on Friday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They came out on top against the Mathis Pirates by a score of 8-3. This was payback for the Greyhounds, who suffered a 3-1 defeat the last time these two teams met.

John Franco was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out nine over seven innings pitched. What's more, he gave up only four hits, the fewest he's had since back in March. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 3-for-3.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Hunter Montemayor, who scored a run while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Eric Perez, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3.

Taft always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .559. They are 3-1 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Taft pushed their record up to 8-8-1 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Mathis, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-12 record this season.
