Basketball Game Preview: Mathews Blue Devils vs. Middlesex Chargers

Mathews is 1-9 against Middlesex since February of 2022 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. The Blue Devils will venture away from home to square off against the Chargers at 7:00 p.m. Mathews has given up an average of 64.8 points per game this season, but Thursday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Mathews came into their game on Tuesday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They were beaten by Carver College and Career Academy 65-38. The Blue Devils were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 37-13.

Despite the defeat, Mathews had strong showings from Adam Greve, who posted nine points and three steals, and Blake Hunley, who earned six points and six boards. Hunley is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in each of the last six games he's played.

Middlesex not only won on Tuesday, but they posted their biggest win since January 8th (when they won 81-36). Everything went their way against Charles City as they made off with a 67-47 win.

Mathews better keep an eye on Davonte Griffin. He was instrumental in Middlesex's win, dropping a double-double with 30 points and 13 rebounds. The dominant performance also gave Griffin a new career-high in field goal percentage (65%). Another player making a difference was Jacob Nowell, who dropped a double-double with 14 points and 13 boards.

Middlesex was working as a unit and finished the game with 20 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Mathews' loss dropped their record down to 4-12. As for Middlesex, the victory got them back to even at 8-8.

Mathews lost to Middlesex on the road by a decisive 66-50 margin in their previous matchup back in December of 2025.
