Recap: Elmira Express vs. Corning-Painted Post Hawks
The Elmira Express entered their tilt with the Corning-Painted Post Hawks with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. Elmira took down Corning-Painted Post 54-39 on Thursday. Given Elmira's advantage in MaxPreps' New York basketball rankings (they are ranked 204th, while Corning-Painted Post is ranked 474th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Elmira was led to victory by Mariah Matias and Ellie Clearwater. Matias dropped a double-double on 12 points and 15 rebounds, while Clearwater scored 20 points along with six steals. Matias is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down ten or more in the last 15 games she's played. Caitlyn Wagner was another key contributor, scoring four points along with eight rebounds.
Elmira's victory ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 10-8. As for Corning-Painted Post, they still haven't won a game yet this season and fell to 0-9.
Elmira will head out on the road to square off against Auburn at 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Corning-Painted Post, they will play host again and welcome Owego Free Academy, where tip off is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Owego Free Academy is coming into the contest with four straight wins on the road, meaning Corning-Painted Post will have to defend against a team hungry for a victory.
