Trinity League headlines Top 10 toughest leagues in high school football

SoCal heavyweight and WCAC lead the way with top-ranked teams, difficult schedules.

Georgia is the only state with more than one league featured.

With the calendar changing to October it means it's time for coaches to start preparing for league games and a perfect opportunity to zone in on the Top 10 toughest leagues in high school football.

Nine different states are represented and the Peach State is the only one with multiple regions featured.

The rankings are based off the MaxPreps' Computer and there are only four leagues in the country that have at least three teams ranked in the Top 100.

Every team in the Trinity League is above .500 and league teams are a combined 24-6 this season. Five of those six losses came against Top 50 opponents and the Trinity has the top two ranked teams in the country. They showed how good they are against some of the nation's best competition in the Trinity League vs. USA Showcase. Mater Dei beat No. 3 St. Frances Academy (Baltimore), St. John Bosco beat No. 28 Good Counsel (Olney, Md.) and JSerra Catholic beat the defending 7A state champs, Milton (Ga.).

The WCAC is the only league/conference in America with four teams ranked in the Top 50. Teams have gone a combined 19-7 with six of those losses coming against Top 25 opponents, including five against Top 5 teams. The DMV has proven to be one of the best areas for high school football and it continues to get better each year.

One of four leagues with at least three teams ranked in the Top 100, this has been one of the most competitive in the country for a very long time. Teams have gone a combined 13-6 but only loss has come against someone not ranked in the Top 25 or against a non-league opponent.

The fourth and final league with at least three teams ranked in the Top 100 has been one of the best in the nation for decades. The four teams are 15-5 and Moeller has four of those losses. St. X, La Salle and Elder all rank in the Top 10 state rankings and will be in the mix to win a state title in 2019.

This region cracks the list because it has three legit contenders with a chance to win the 7A state title in Marietta, McEachern and Hillgrove. Outside of Kennesaw Mountain the region has gone a combined 19-2.

This region features two of the best teams in Georgia as well as the country. Lowndes is 6-0 and showed it can hang with anyone after beating back-to-back Florida 6A state champs Northwestern (Miami) 48-21. Colquitt County is always in the mix to win the state title and has the talent to make its fifth appearance in six years in the state championship game. Outside of Tift County the region has gone 15-1.

Florida's 6A District 16 used to be an easy choice, but with the new classifications this season things more difficult for the Sunshine State. 4A Region 4 takes the cake because it's one of two league/districts featured in the Top 10 that has five teams ranked in the Top 500 computer rankings.

It came down to District 7-6A and District 5-6A for the top spot in Texas but the depth was the deciding factor. It's one of four leagues/districts featured in the Top 10 with at least five teams ranked in the Top 1,000.

This league features some of the best teams in the state. Three teams check in the Top 10 Arizona rankings and Chandler is the top rated team in the Grand Canyon State. The Wolves have won three consecutive 6A state titles and will be in the mix for the inaugural AIA Open Division state championship this season. This league is off to a great start in 2019 going 25-4 through non-league play.

Alabama's 7A Region 3 and Florida's 4A Region 4 are the only two featured with at least five teams ranked in the Top 500 computer rankings. Those five squads have combined to go 23-4 and all four of those losses have come against region opponents.
