The Marcus Marauders will head out to take on the Guyer Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Marcus got their first taste of in-conference action on Friday and they started things off strong. They blew past Braswell 42-21. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Marauders' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 75th, while the Bengals are ranked 305th).
Colton Nussmeier produced another solid performance throwing for 272 yards and three TDs. Luke Susko was in the mix too, providing Marcus with two scores.
Meanwhile, you can't lose the game if you win every quarter, and that was precisely Guyer's strategy against Hebron on Thursday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Wildcats blew the Hawks out of the water with a 44-16 final score. The Wildcats haven't had any issues with the Hawks recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive win against them.
Guyer's win came from a few key players Marcus will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Corbin Glasco, who picked up 97 receiving yards and one touchdown. Those 97 receiving yards gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Zephyr Kreye, who threw for 154 yards and a pair of TDs on only 14 passes.
Guyer didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Owen Whistler and Baylin Middleton. Whistler also set a new season-high mark in total tackles with ten. Guyer received some extra help from Paxton Wiliams, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.
Guyer's record now sits at 4-2. As for Marcus, they now have a winning record of 3-2.
Thursday's contest might be decided on the ground. Marcus has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 176.6 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Guyer struggles in that department as they've been averaging 212.3 rushing yards. There's a good chance Thursday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Marcus was taken down by Guyer 42-13 when the teams last played back in October of 2024. Can the Marauders avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
