Softball Recap: Walnut Takes a Loss

Walnut extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to five on Tuesday, dropping them down to 0-3. They fell 6-2 to the Hatley Tigers. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Wildcats of the 7-1 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in March of 2025.

Walnut saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Maddie Wilburn, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

As for Hatley, they pushed their record up to 8-2 with the victory, which was their sixth straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.8 runs over those games.

On Hatley's side, Emily Hill spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on five hits and racked up 13 Ks. Hill has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Kelsey Coffey, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Raigan Brown was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base and two RBI.

Coming up, Walnut will face off against Hamilton at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Lions' pitching crew has only allowed 2.5 runs per game this season, so the Wildcats' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Hatley, they will challenge Caledonia at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Tigers 3.7, the Cavaliers 1) so any runs scored will be well earned.
