Baseball Game Preview: Somerset Academy Panthers vs. Coral Gables Cavaliers

The Somerset Academy Panthers are taking a road trip to square off against the Coral Gables Cavaliers at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Somerset Academy's pitching crew heads into the matchup hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Saturday. They put the hurt on Hialeah with a sharp 6-0 win. The Panthers not only won on Saturday, but they posted their biggest win since March 18th.

Luis Rivera tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out nine over five innings pitched. Those nine strikeouts gave him a new career-high.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Jon Mora, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances. Somerset Academy is 6-1 when Mora posts two or more runs, but 4-12 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Alan Sanchez, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-3.

Meanwhile, Coral Gables earned a 7-4 victory over Brito on Friday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Cavaliers.

Coral Gables also got a great performance from Carlos Torres as he pitched five innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits. Torres has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.

At the plate, Coral Gables saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Diego Llanes, who scored a run while going 1-for-2. Julian Saveedra was another, scoring a run and stealing two bases while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances.

Somerset Academy's record now sits at 10-13. As for Coral Gables, their record is now 9-11-1.

Somerset Academy took their win against Coral Gables in their previous meeting back in March of 2024 by a conclusive 11-1 score. Do the Panthers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Cavaliers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
