Basketball Recap: Brunswick's Loss Ends Five-Game Winning Streak on the Road

If Brunswick was feeling good fresh off their 64-40 takedown of Statesboro two weeks ago, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Brunswick Pirates fell 50-37 to the Glynn Academy Terrors on Friday. The game marked the Pirates' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.

Despite the loss, Brunswick saw an underclassman step up: freshman Samyya Gilbert posted ten points in addition to eight rebounds and three blocks. Patrice Mungin was another key player, putting up eight points and three steals.

Even though they lost, Brunswick smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive boards in 23 consecutive contests dating back to last season.

Glynn Academy's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Alyssa Martin led the charge by dropping a double-double on 12 points and ten boards. Martin has been hot, having also posted two or more steals the last six times she's played. Another player making a difference was Janiyah Spaulding, who went 6 for 13 on her way to 14 points along with eight rebounds and six steals.

Brunswick's defeat ended a five-game streak of away wins and brought them to 14-6. As for Glynn Academy, they pushed their record up to 12-10 with the victory, which was their third straight at home.

Brunswick wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 61-30 win against South Effingham on the 1st. Glynn Academy has also already played their next game, a 44-36 victory against Richmond Hill on the 1st.
