Baseball Recap: Foothill Victorious

Foothill had lost three games on the road, but after bumping their record up to 13-9 on Wednesday that streak is in the rearview. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the Dublin Gaels 2-1. That's more bragging rights for the Falcons, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

Ryan Cooney tossed a big game, striking out seven batters over 5.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off six hits. He is becoming a predictor of Foothill's success: when he allows at most one earned run the team is 6-1 (and 7-8 when he doesn't).

At the plate, Connor Keenan was excellent, getting on base in four of his six plate appearances with two runs. Hudson Flora was another key player, going 2-for-6 with one RBI.

As for Dublin, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 15-7 record this season. Even worse, they were so close so many times: the losses came by an average of only 1.75 runs.

On Dublin's side, they handed starting duties to Jonah Marquez, who gave a strong showing despite the result: he didn't allow a single earned run over four innings pitched.

On the hitting side, Dublin saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ethan Thai, who got on base in five of his six plate appearances with one run. Another was Kolby Breining, who got four hits from his six at bats.

Foothill and Dublin should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. The Falcons will challenge Amador Valley at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday with a big rank advantage (76 vs. 313). Meanwhile, Dublin (ranked 110th) will meet Livermore (ranked 476th) at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
