Baseball Game Preview: St. Augustine Saints vs. Cathedral Catholic Dons

For the second straight game, St. Augustine will face off against Cathedral Catholic. The Saints will be playing at home against the Dons at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (St. Augustine has four straight victories, Cathedral Catholic has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

While St. Augustine's win against Cathedral Catholic wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Saints sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 3-2 victory over the Dons on Tuesday.

St. Augustine got a great performance from Grayson Boles as he struck out six batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. Boles has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances.

At the plate, St. Augustine saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mikey Ruiz, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI. That's the most RBI Ruiz has posted since back in April.

St. Augustine's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 17-8-1. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Cathedral Catholic, their defeat dropped their record down to 13-10.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Thursday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. St. Augustine has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.3 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Cathedral Catholic struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.2 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
