Basketball Recap: Winfield Takes a Loss

Winfield was the 64-62 winner over Fayette County when they last played one another back in January, but their luck changed this time around. The Winfield Pirates fell 59-50 to the Fayette County Tigers on Friday.

Despite the loss, Winfield still got an impressive performance from Slate Gilbert, who posted 30 points and seven rebounds. That was a full 60% of Winfield's points, marking the sixth time in a row he's had more than a third of the team's points. Jack Cook was another key player, putting up six points and five rebounds.

Even though they lost, Winfield smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in three consecutive contests.

Winfield's defeat dropped their record down to 6-3. As for Fayette County, the win was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 7-2.

Winfield wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 67-33 loss against Athens on the 14th. Fayette County and Gordo will compete for holiday cheer at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
