It was a good run, but Mercedes unfortunately witnessed the end of their four-game winning streak on Friday. They had to suffer through a 62-19 loss at the hands of the Harlingen South Hawks. While losing is never fun, the Tigers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 993rd, while the Hawks are ranked 364th).
Madilyn Noriega was Mercedes' leading scorer, having posted eight points. Stephanie Cano held things down on the boards with nine rebounds.
Harlingen South got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Allison Miller out in front who went 7 of 14 on her way to 14 points along with seven steals and six boards. The dominant performance gave Miller a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jiselle Montemayor, who went 6 of 9 on her way to 12 points in addition to seven boards and five steals.
Mercedes' loss was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 3-1 and their overall record down to 11-10. As for Harlingen South, they pushed their record up to 14-5 with the victory, which was their 16th straight on the road dating back to last season.
Mercedes wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 35-32 defeat against Donna North on the 17th. As for Harlingen South, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 55-13 win against Edcouch-Elsa on the 17th.
