Basketball Recap: Mariah Matias' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Elmira over Horseheads

Elmira lost against Horseheads on January 10th and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Saturday. The Elmira Express took a 48-35 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Horseheads Blue Raiders. The matchup marked the Express' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

Elmira lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Mariah Matias, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 12 rebounds. Matias is crushing it when it comes to boards: she's pulled down at least eight every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Addison Taft, who went 5 for 10 en route to 13 points.

Elmira's loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 9-3. As for Horseheads, their win was their 11th straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 10-1.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Elmira will face off against Chenango Valley at 7:15 p.m. on Monday. As for Horseheads, they will take on Johnson City at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Johnson City is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 52.3 points per game this season.
