Softball Recap: Moshannon Valley Black Knights/Damsels vs. Purchase Line Red Dragons
Moshannon Valley extended their losing streak to three on Monday, dropping them down to 6-8. They came up short against the Purchase Line Red Dragons, falling 12-1. The Black Knights/Damsels were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Red Dragons apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2023.
Moshannon Valley saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Annabeth Anderson, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.
As for Purchase Line, the victory was the ninth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 11-3. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight contests by six runs or more this season.
On Purchase Line's side, Rylee Mahaffey made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out 16 over seven innings pitched. Mahaffey has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with two RBI and one run.
In other batting news, Purchase Line got a massive performance out of Julia Matko, who went 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBI. Those three runs gave Matko a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Leah Nelson, who went 2-for-5 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one double.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Moshannon Valley will head out to take on Glendale at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Vikings have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 10.47 runs per game on average), something the Black Knights/Damsels will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Purchase Line, they are taking a road trip to square off against Homer-Center at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Red Dragons' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Wildcats have averaged an impressive 6.1 runs per game this season.
