Softball Preview: Steilacoom Sentinels vs. Orting Cardinals

Steilacoom is 1-9 against Orting since April of 2017 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Tuesday. The Sentinels will host the Cardinals at 4:00 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Steilacoom is headed into Tuesday's match looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their fourth straight game on Monday. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 19-18 heartbreaker at the hands of Foss. Even if the Sentinels couldn't come away with the win, the high-scoring effort was a great turnaround for their hitters, which had struggled int the games prior.

Izzy Cortez and Harper Runn stepped up to the plate in a big way. Cortez scored three runs while getting on base in four of her six plate appearances, while Runn got on base in five of her six plate appearances with four RBI, one stolen base, and one run. The team also got some help courtesy of Aubrie Clark, who scored a run while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Orting). They came out on top against Eatonville by a score of 15-11 on Friday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Cardinals.

Kathryn Prest was a major factor no matter where she played. She pitched seven innings while giving up just two earned (and nine unearned) runs off 11 hits. Those hits marked the first that she allowed this season. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances.

In other batting news, Orting let Madalynn Halte and Katie Arnett run wild. Halte scored three runs and stole four bases while going 3-for-5, while Arnett scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4. That's the most runs Arnett has posted since back in April of 2024. Ryann Polly was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing three bases.

Orting kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

Steilacoom's loss dropped their record down to 1-7. As for Orting, the victory was their first on the road , bumping their record up to 2-5.

The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Steilacoom has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Orting struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 4.1 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
