Bishop O'Connell has won 11 straight games at home (dating back to last season), while Elizabeth Seton has won 11 straight on the road, but those streaks won't matter much on Friday. Bishop O'Connell will challenge Elizabeth Seton at 4:00 p.m. Bishop O'Connell is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 12.3 runs per game this season.
Bishop O'Connell is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Virginia's top teams: Paul VI, who was ranked tenth at the time (Bishop O'Connell was ranked first). Bishop O'Connell had just enough and edged out Paul VI 8-7.
Annie Van Dyck looked comfortable as she tossed two innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one earned run any time she's pitched this season.
At the plate, Ari Clark was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and one double. Abby Bond was another key player, scoring two runs while going 3-for-4.
Bishop O'Connell was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .379. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .318 or higher in nine consecutive contests dating back to last season.
While Elizabeth Seton didn't have the best season last year (they finished 5-11), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They walked away with a 6-1 win over Cape Henry Collegiate on Tuesday.
Kimmya Sims made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out 14 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. Sims was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Celia Wills, who went 1-for-4 with one home run. That home run marked the first that she launched this season.
Bishop O'Connell's victory bumped their record up to 6-0. As for Elizabeth Seton, their win bumped their record up to 4-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Bishop O'Connell has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 10 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Elizabeth Seton struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 11.6 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
