Baseball Game Preview: Ashley Screaming Eagle vs. West Johnston Wildcats

The Ashley Screaming Eagle will be taking part in a tournament against the West Johnston Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Ashley 2.6, West Johnston 2.7) so any runs scored will be well earned.

Ashley is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of North Carolina's top teams: Grace Christian, who was ranked tenth at the time (Ashley was ranked second). The Screaming Eagle skirted past the Crusaders 3-1. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Screaming Eagle have posted since March 21st.

Cane Mehling spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered a run (which was unearned) on seven hits and racked up 11 Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Drew Potter, who went 1-for-2 with one home run and three RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March.

Meanwhile, Monday just wasn't the day for West Johnston's offense. They fell 5-0 to First Colonial on Monday. The match marked the first time this season in which the Wildcats were not able to get on the board.

Ashley's win bumped their record up to 16-2. As for West Johnston, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 11-6 record this season.
