Bayfield came into Monday's matchup looking for another win against Monte Vista, but Azariah Hurtado wouldn't allow it. The Monte Vista Pirates managed a 44-40 win over the Bayfield Wolverines on Monday thanks to Hurtado, who dropped a double-double with 14 points and 17 boards. He also grabbed six steals, which is notable because Monte Vista is 5-2 when he posts at least five steals, but 5-8 otherwise.

Another player making a difference was Ismael MedIna, who posted six points. He continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played.

Despite the defeat, Bayfield saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Hayes Malone put up 11 points.

The victory got Monte Vista back to even at 10-10. As for Bayfield, their loss dropped their record down to 12-8.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Monte Vista will host Montezuma-Cortez at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. That contest will pit two of the most dominant guards against one another: Hurtado and Trey Hall. As for Bayfield, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Telluride at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Bayfield is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 53.2 points per game this season.
