1. Blue Springs

Team preview

For as dominant as Blue Springs was last season, it was also surprisingly young. It has seven starters returning on offense to go along with five on defense. Dalvin Warmack was arguably the top player in the state last year. Look for Cobi Bissell to step into his role this fall. Still, Blue Springs should hardly miss a beat.

2. Lee's Summit West
Head coach: Royce Boehm
2013 finish: 13-1

Fifteen starters return from last year's one-loss Lee's Summit West squad. Head coach Royce Boehm is excited about the group of incoming sophomores. The blend of youth and experience could be a winning combination this fall. Tyler Boehm, a 6-foot-2 junior linebacker who is the coach's son, could have a breakout season.

3. Rock Bridge (Columbia)
Head coach: A.J. Ofodile
2013 finish: 8-6
Team preview

Rock Bridge ended 2013 on an impressive run. It closed a regular season with a 31-21 loss to Jefferson City. The next week, in its playoff opener, Rock Bridge exacted revenge on Jefferson City, winning easily 48-18. Rock Bridge won three more games before falling to Blue Springs in the Class 6 final. This year's offense should be superb, with quarterback Logan Twehous, running back Matt Troyer and blue-chip receiver Alex Ofodile all back.

4. Rockhurst (Kansas City)
Head coach: Tony Severino
2013 finish: 5-5

Rockhurst should be due for a bounce-back season. Last year, three of its five losses were by five points or fewer. Trent Green Jr. is back at quarterback. He's one of six starters returning on the offensive side of the ball. A brutal schedule includes most of the state's top teams, as well as a matchup with Arkansas power Bentonville.

5. Webb City
Head coach: John Roderique
2013 finish: 14-1; Class 4 state champion
Team preview

Its 46-game winning streak may have been snapped, but 2013 was still a very good season for Webb City, which finished 14-1 and took home another state title. Starting quarterback Devin Pickett is back, as is receiver Kiante Hardin, who caught 11 touchdown passes a year ago. Webb City, as always, will be a run-first offense. Tyler Davison and Pickett, both of whom rushed for over 600 yards last year, will lead the backfield.
