Softball Game Preview: Cox Falcons vs. Kempsville Chiefs

Cox hasn't had much luck against Kempsville recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Falcons will square off against the Chiefs at 4:00 p.m. Cox is coming into the game hot, having won their last five games.

Cox is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They put the hurt on Green Run with a sharp 20-4 victory on Thursday. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest win of the season.

Chloe Vice was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits (and only one walk). That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in April of 2024. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with one triple and two RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Olivia Peterson, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with five RBI, two runs, and one triple. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Piper Aman, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs and two RBI.

Cox kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 18 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 4.6 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 matchups they've averaged 11.8.

Meanwhile, Kempsville came up short against First Colonial on Friday and fell 6-3.

Cox pushed their record up to 8-2 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.5 runs on average over those games. As for Kempsville, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-4.

Cox couldn't quite get it done against Kempsville in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 as they fell 4-1. Can the Falcons avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
