Basketball Recap: Northside - Jacksonville Starts Season with Victory on the Road

Northside - Jacksonville had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They took down the Ashley Screaming Eagle 65-49 on Tuesday.

Leading Northside - Jacksonville to victory were Joaliel Caraballo and Peyton Mayhew. Caraballo shot 50% from the field en route to 16 points along with eight steals and six boards, while Mayhew posted 20 points and four steals. Caraballo is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in each of the last 16 games he's played dating back to last season. The team also got some help courtesy of Justin Tourigny, who went 5-for-8 on his way to 10 points and seven rebounds.

Northside - Jacksonville smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in five consecutive matchups dating back to last season.

When it comes to explaining why Ashley lost, don't look at Keyon Jones. Despite the final result, he shot 63% from the field to rack up 11 points and five boards. Another player making a difference was Zamier Williams, who scored six points.

This is the second loss in a row for Ashley and nudges their season record down to 1-2.

Northside - Jacksonville and Ashley will both get a bit of extra prep time before their next contests. The next time the Monarchs see the court they'll take on Southwest Onslow at 8:00 p.m. on the 8th. As for Ashley, their break will end when they face Swansboro at 8:00 p.m. on the 5th.
