Basketball Recap: Milton-Union Starts Season with Win at Home

Milton-Union gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Saturday. They put the hurt on the Newton Local Indians with a sharp 63-41 win. That's more bragging rights for the Bulldogs, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

Milton-Union's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Michaela Firks, who went 6-for-12 to rack up 18 points in addition to eight rebounds and five assists. Those five assists gave Firks a new career-high. Sophie Layman was another key player, dropping a double-double with 14 points and 12 boards.

Milton-Union smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in 11 consecutive contests dating back to last season.

Coming up, Milton-Union will venture away from home to take on Lehman Catholic at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. The game will give the Bulldogs their first taste of in-conference action this season. As for Newton Local, they will have a little extra prep time after the defeat as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Fort Recovery at 6:00 p.m. on December 2.
