Baseball Recap: South Makes It Ten in a Row at Home

South entered their tilt with Woodlake on Saturday with four consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with five. They blew past the Tigers 14-3. That looming 14-3 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Spartans yet this season.

Josh Encinas made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits (and not a single walk). What's more, he gave up only zero walks, the fewest he's had since back in March of 2024. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing three bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. He has been hot, having posted at least one stolen base the last five times he's played.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Tomas Encinas, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, three stolen bases, and five RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in May of 2024. Another player making a difference was Felipe Retano, who scored three runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.

South always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .636. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .500 or higher in three consecutive contests.

South's win was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 7-2. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.9 runs on average over those games. As for Woodlake, their loss dropped their record down to 3-3.

Looking ahead, it'll be Northside v. Southside when South and North meet at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Woodlake, they will be playing at home against Orosi at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
