The Viera Hawks are taking a road trip to challenge the South Lake Eagles at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Viera is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.4 runs per game this season.
Viera proved they can win big on Wednesday (they won by six) and on Thursday they proved they can win the close ones too. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 6-4 victory over Astronaut. The win was familiar territory for the Hawks, who have now won three matchups in a row.
Riley Makousky spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and one unearned) runs on five hits and racked up nine Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Tori Berry was excellent, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3. The team also got some help courtesy of Rylan Cozzie Cozzolino, who scored two runs while getting on base in two of her four plate appearances.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for South Lake, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Monday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand Osceola a 5-0 shutout on Tuesday. The victory continues a trend for the Eagles in their matchups with the Kowboys: they've now won five in a row.
Zoie Rogers was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out six over seven innings pitched. Rogers was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Alex Watson, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3. That's the most runs she has posted since back in February. Another player making a difference was Makiah Palacio, who went 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI.
South Lake kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Osceola only managed three hits.
Viera's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 14-6. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.8 runs over those games. As for South Lake, the win got them back to even at 11-11.
Thursday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Viera hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .380. However, it's not like South Lake struggles in that department as they've averaged .312. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Viera was able to grind out a solid victory over South Lake when the teams last played back in April of 2024, winning 7-3. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Hawks since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
