Recap: Gretna Hawks vs. William Campbell Generals

The Gretna Hawks had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 31.7 points), and they went ahead and made it four on Friday. They managed a 25-21 win over William Campbell. Given Gretna's advantage in MaxPreps' Virginia football rankings (they are ranked 109th, while William Campbell is ranked 252nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Gretna was led to victory by Melvin Wooden and Amare Gunn. Wooden threw for 222 yards and two touchdowns on only 15 passes, while Gunn picked up 150 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Gunn's longest reception was for an incredible 85 yards.

Gretna's win was their fourth straight on the road, which bumped their overall record up to 8-2. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 0-10 Martinsville and 3-7 Dan River (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 27.5% over those games). As for William Campbell, they have been struggling recently, as they've lost three of their last four games, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-6 record this season.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Gretna will take on Floyd County at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Floyd County is coming into the game on a three-game losing streak. As for William Campbell, they will be playing at home against Franklin at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday. Franklin comes in on a streak of failing to score more than eight points in their last four games, a trend the team is of course eager to reverse.
