Baseball Recap: Berne-Knox-Westerlo Wins Going Away Against Mayfield

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Cobleskill-Richmondville, Berne-Knox-Westerlo was happy to have turned things around on Wednesday. They blew past the Mayfield Panthers 14-5. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Bulldogs also won the last time the pair played back in May of 2024.

Henry Ferguson was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out six batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off six hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with three RBI. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, GG Lefkatditis and Chris Dwyer did most of the damage at the plate: Lefkatditis went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one double, while Dwyer went 1-for-4 with three stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. Berne-Knox-Westerlo is undefeated when Dwyer posts two or more runs, but 1-6-1 otherwise. Blake Quay was another key player, earning two runs and five stolen bases.

The victory was their first on the road , bumping their record up to 4-6-1. As for Mayfield, they are on a six-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-3.

Coming up, Berne-Knox-Westerlo will be playing in front of their home fans against Middleburgh at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The Knights' pitching crew has only allowed 3.6 runs per game this season, so the Bulldogs' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Mayfield, they will square off against Duanesburg at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
