Baseball Recap: Hillsboro Comes Up Short

Hillsboro had lost 15 straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Wednesday they dropped their record down to 3-18 to make it 16. They fell 9-4 to the Gillespie Miners. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Hiltoppers of the 10-0 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2024.

Hillsboro saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Liam Blackburn, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run and one double.

As for Gillespie, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight games. That's provided a massive bump to their 15-8 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games.

On Gillespie's side, Jack Kaylor was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, one run, and one double. Those three hits gave Kaylor a new career-high. Brody Shaw was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.

Coming up, Gillespie will look to defend their home field on Thursday against Pawnee at 4:30 p.m. The Indians will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something the Miners surely won't give up without a fight. Hillsboro will be paying especially close attention to Gillespie's match: after Gillespie faces off against Calhoun, they'll take on Hillsboro again at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
