Softball Recap: Independence Has No Trouble Against Washington

Independence won against Washington last Tuesday with 15 runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Thursday. The Patriots were the clear victors by a 15-3 margin over the Rams. The win continues a trend for the Patriots in their matchups with the Rams: they've now won six in a row.

Mariana Perez Vargas was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 13 batters over five innings while giving up three earned runs off only two hits. That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in April of 2024. She was also big at the plate, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.

In other batting news, Independence got a massive performance out of Nailea Lopez Flores, who scored four runs and stole three bases while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Genevieve De La Cruz, who scored three runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-3.

Independence's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 8-0. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Washington, they are on a six-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-7.

Coming up, Independence will square off against La Joya Community at 3:45 p.m. on Monday. The Patriots will need to watch out since the Fighting Lobos have now posted at least ten runs in their last six matches. As for Washington, they will take on Cortez at 3:45 p.m. on Friday. The Colts have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 14.89 runs per game on average), something the Rams will no doubt try to take advantage of.
