Baseball Game Preview: Dan River Wildcats vs. Appomattox County Raiders

Dan River hasn't had much luck against Appomattox County recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Wildcats will take on the Raiders at 5:30 p.m. Dan River is coming into the game hot, having won their last three games.

On Monday, Dan River beat Gretna 6-1.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Appomattox County). They were the clear victors by a 20-0 margin over Liberty on Monday. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the team's high-flying offense, the game also marked the team's biggest victory of the season.

Jack Wilkerson and Caid Burch made a splash while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Wilkerson tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Burch tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Wilkerson has been consistent: he hasn't given up a single walk in five consecutive appearances. At bat, Wilkerson got on base in all three of his plate appearances with one run and one double, while Burch earned three runs and one stolen base. Those three runs gave Burch a new career-high.

In other batting news, R J Martin was a standout: he went 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBI. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Evan Carwile, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs.

Appomattox County kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 19 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in three consecutive matches.

Appomattox County is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-5 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.6 runs over those games. As for Dan River, the victory got them back to even at 5-5.
