League recap: Springfield Township climbs in state rankings with win

Springfield Township moved up to 272 from 301 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in Suburban One - American. The Spartans climbed the ranks as a result of a 27-13 win over the Spartans.

Upper Moreland was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from fifth to third in the league. Earlier in the week, the Bears triumphed over Upper Merion Area 35-20.

Alton Custus was the best wideout in the league this week as Plymouth Whitemarsh topped Cheltenham. Custus racked up four receptions for 89 yards. Corey Kelly helped Plymouth Whitemarsh's passing attack out by catching four balls for 15 yards.

Chris Stone put up the best numbers through the air as Springfield Township fell to Wissahickon. He finished with four completions for 102 yards and 45 touchdowns. Stone's favorite target this week was Brendan Doyle, who caught three passes for 69 yards.

Hassan Gardner was the most productive running back in Suburban One - American this week. In 28 carries, he ran for 139 yards as the Vikings defeated the Panthers. Teammate Jequan Mitchell added to the ground attack by rushing for six yards.

Upper Merion Area's Carmen Fortino and Michael Grant have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Fortino has thrown for 771 yards this season, while Grant has 17 catches for 351 yards. Plymouth Whitemarsh's Kelly leads the league in rushing yards with 631.

Two of the top units in the league will face off this week when Chris Shelly's team takes on Harold Smith's team. The Spartans' offense has scored 139 points this season, good for No. 1 in the league, while the Vikings have allowed only 195 on the year.

Upper Dublin took down Norristown 35-19 last week, the largest margin of any game.
