Abilene (Texas) took the final lead of the game on Saturday as
Evin Abbe thew a touchdown to
Davonte' Taylor with with 9:00 remaining in the third quarter, bringing the team to victory over
Midland Lee (Midland, Texas) 31-17.
The Rebels pulled ahead on a touchdown run, and subsequently went into halftime leading 17-14. The Eagles scored the winning points with a Abbe touchdown pass to Taylor that came in the third quarter.
With the win Abilene extended its winning streak to seven games. AHS defeated the Cougars 31-27 last week.
The Eagles' most effective player was Abbe. The senior quarterback threw two touchdowns and ran for one touchdown.
Midland Lee came in allowing just 16.2 points per game this season. ML struggled against Abilene's offense, which entered the game scoring 33.0 points per game. AHS went into the matchup giving up only 12.0 points per game.
When the two teams played each other last season, the Eagles came away with a 49-34 victory.
The defeat comes as a step back for Midland Lee, which notched a 63-6 victory over Odessa in its previous outing. The loss snapped the Midland school's 3-game winning streak.
Midland Lee (4-2) will play a 5A Region I District 2 game against Midland next week, while Abilene (7-0) will take on Coronado also in a 5A Region I District 2 game.
