Game recap: Northwestern high school football team needs late heroics to defeat Columbus

Northwestern (Miami, Fla.) captured the lead on a touchdown run with 1:00 to go in the fourth quarter to defeat Columbus (Miami, Fla.) 10-7 on Saturday.

The Explorers pulled ahead on a defensive touchdown, and subsequently went into halftime leading 7-3. The Bulls scored the winning points with a touchdown run that came in the fourth quarter.

Despite scoring zero points in the third, Northwestern still trailed by 4 points going into the fourth quarter. But seven points in the fourth helped NHS pull out the victory.

Matt Freixa played well for Columbus. The senior kicked one extra point.

CHS's lone touchdown came on a defensive touchdown in the first quarter.

Led by Artie Burns, the Bulls went into the matchup giving up only 6.4 points per game.



A 40-32 Northwestern victory was the result when the squads faced off last season.

The loss comes after Columbus defeated Coral Park 63-7 last week.

Northwestern (5-1) goes up against Belen Jesuit in a 6A District 16 game matchup next week, while Columbus (4-3) locks horns with Coral Gables in a 8A District 14 game.
