Football Game Preview: Onteora Eagles vs. Eldred Yellowjackets

The Onteora Eagles will face off against the Eldred Yellowjackets at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.

Onteora is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of New York's top teams: Pawling, who was ranked 12th at the time (Onteora was ranked 23rd). The Eagles took a 34-28 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Tigers on Saturday. The Eagles haven't had much luck with the Tigers recently, as the team has come up short the last seven times they've met.

Loss or not, Onteora got some senior leadership from Chase Matteson and Kyle Berryann. Matteson rushed for 97 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Berryann gained 197 total yards and a touchdown.

Even if they lost, Onteora's defensive line still kept up the pressure with three sacks. Liam Vandebogart was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up two himself. He is also on a roll when it comes to total tackles, as he's now made six or more in each of the last three games he's played.

Meanwhile, while Eldred put up some points on Thursday, the same can't be said for Fallsburg. The Yellowjackets blew past the Comets 21-0. The Yellowjackets might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five games by 21 points or more this season.

Eldred is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-2 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 38.3 points over those games. As for Onteora, their defeat was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 3-1 and their overall record down to 5-2.

Onteora couldn't quite get it done against Eldred in their previous meeting two weeks ago as they fell 52-40. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of the Yellowjackets' Koen McGill, who rushed for 182 yards and three TDs while picking up 9.6 yards per carry, and also threw for 91 yards and one touchdown. Now that the Eagles know the damage he can cause, will they be able to stop him this time? There's only one way to find out.
