Softball Recap: Gibault Catholic Wins Going Away Against Valmeyer

Gibault Catholic lost a heartbreaker the last time they played Valmeyer, but it's fair to say they got their revenge given the result of Tuesday's contest. The Hawks put the hurt on the Pirates with a sharp 14-2 win on Tuesday. This was a revenge game for the Hawks: when they faced off against the Pirates back in March, they had to take a 10-8 loss.

Ashley Murphy made a big impact no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 11 over six innings pitched. Those 11 strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 3-for-4. She also hit two doubles, marking her first of the season.

In other batting news, Karina Jerkatis was excellent, scoring two runs while getting on base in three of her five plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Sophie Winkeler, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4.

The victory made it two in a row for Gibault Catholic and bumps their season record up to 4-4. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 2 run in those games. As for Valmeyer, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-3.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Gibault Catholic will square off against Steeleville at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Valmeyer, they will head out to face off against New Athens at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The match will give the Pirates their first taste of in-conference action this season.
