Maxwell baseball team breaks scores of records

Tyler Wells, Steven Perry, James Bowen combine for a multitude of state and national records for Northern California tiny school.

The Maxwell (Calif.) Panthers ended a record-breaking season in record-breaking fashion Saturday with an 11-0 win over Tulelake with Tyler Wells and Steven Perry combining for, you guessed it, a no-hitter.

Wells started the game and threw six innings of no-hit ball with 14 strikeouts. The only two Honker baserunners reached base on a dropped third strike and a hit batsman. He picked up his 35th win in a row, and for good measure he hit for the cycle, adding to his state record for career doubles and career (and season) RBIs.

While Wells could have completed the seventh inning and possibly earned the no-hitter and shutout on his own, he preferred to share the moment with his best friend, according to a report in the Yuba-Sutter Appeal-Democrat.

Wells told the Appeal-Democrat that he asked Maxwell coach Eric Lay to put Perry in for the final three outs.

"I told coach he deserves it," Wells told the Appeal-Democrat. "He's been the guy for us all season."

Perry finished off the game with three straight strikeouts to give the Panthers the Northern Section Division V championship and a perfect 30-0 record.

The win climaxed an incredible season that saw the Panthers pile up state record after state record with a national record or two thrown in for good measure.

Wells and Perry were at the center of the record-breaking feats, but senior infielder James Bowen also set a couple of state records of his own. Coach Eric Lay even got in on the act, becoming the winningest coach in California (based on percentage) with a career record of 254-40.

The no-hitter, the 11th of the season for the Panthers, extended Maxwell's national record in the category of no hitters by a team, according to the National Federation of High Schools Record Book. Wells and Perry combined for a no-hitter for the third time this season. Wells also had three no-hitters of his own while Perry had five.

The duo also combined for Maxwell's 18th shutout of the season, a California state record according to the Cal-Hi Sports Record Book and Almanac. Wells and Perry also finished the year with 0.00 ERAs with Perry not allowing a run of any kind all season long. They become the second set of teammates to finish the season with ERAs of 0.00.

Following is a look at the various state and national records set by the Panthers this year. Included in the list are marks that make their way into the Cal-Hi Sports California State Record Book (last published in 2008) but are not necessarily records. Their place on the all-time lists is noted. Also noted are national records as determined by the NFHS Record Book.

Lastly, the list of Northern Section records set by the Panthers is included at the end.
