Baseball Recap: Capuchino Comes Up Short

Capuchino dropped their record down to 16-10 on Friday, which also ended the team's three-game streak of wins at home. They lost 14-2 to the Sequoia Ravens. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Mustangs have suffered against the Ravens since April 6, 2021.

Will Hafer made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-3 with one home run. That home run was his first of the season. Andres Gomez was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI.

As for Sequoia, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 14-10 record this season. With that win, they brought their scoring average up to 6.3 runs per game.

On Sequoia's side, Morgan Winfield made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He struck out seven batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off five hits (and not a single walk). Winfield also tossed no walks, which is notable because Sequoia is 7-1 when he allows at most one walk, but 7-9 otherwise. Winfield was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and two doubles. Those two doubles gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Logan Mathias was incredible, going 3-for-5 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Sequoia's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 8-10 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Drew Ostrander, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and one double.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Capuchino will square off against Burlingame at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Sequoia, they will be playing at home against Los Altos at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Ravens' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Eagles have averaged an impressive 6.2 runs per game this season.
