Baseball Recap: Central Takes a Loss

Central had lost three straight at home, but on Thursday they dropped their record down to 8-10 to make it four. They fell just short of the Calexico Bulldogs by a score of 6-4. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Spartans have suffered since March 7th.

Nico Viesca spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered six runs (all of which were unearned) on four hits and racked up nine Ks. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Central is 2-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 6-9 otherwise.

On the hitting side, Central saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Diego Acuna, who went 1-for-4 with one stolen base and one run. Silverio Bobadilla also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.

As for Calexico, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won ten of their last 11 matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-3-1 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.6 runs on average over those games.

On Calexico's side, David Lara tossed a big game, pitching five innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits. Lara has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one walk in seven consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Ander Garcia was incredible, going 3-for-4 with three stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. Those three stolen bases gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Randy Baez, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Central will head out to take on Jurupa Hills at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for Calexico, they will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Holtville at 7:00 p.m. on May 6.
